How to Decorate a T-Rex Sugar Cookie: Beginner-Friendly Tutorial

  Bake and cool cookies before decorating. Make sure cookies are fully cooled. If they are warm, the icing will run off of them. Make royal icing. Learn how to mix different consistencies of royal icing here>>
  
  Prepare the following icing colors:
  
  Piping Consistency:
  Green
  White
  
  Flood Consistency:
  Green
  Orange

  
• 2Put one drop of red food coloring into a food safe small container. Using a food-safe toothbrush, gently paint the bottom part of the T-Rex's jaw to create a brilliant red mouth.
  
• 3Using piping consistency green icing, outline the shape.

  Once the shape is fully outlined, prepare your green flood consistency royal icing.

  
• 5Using piping consistency green icing, pipe some squiggles in the body of the T-Rex. This will help to give your flood some structure, so that the icing doesn't collapse as it cools.
  
• 6Fill in the body of the beast with flood-consistency green icing. Use a scribe tool or toothpick to move the icing around to ensure full coverage.
• 7While the flood icing is still wet, use piping consistency orange royal icing to pipe dots and swirls to give your dino some detail. Doing this step while your green flood icing is still wet will ensure that the details look like they are part of the dino, rather than standing out on the body of the dino. If you prefer more dimension, you can wait for your flood icing to dry 30-60 minutes before piping the details.
  
• 8To create some detail in the belly, pipe orange piping consistency icing on the underside of the dino, then use a scribe tool to create swirls & blend the belly area into the rest of the dino.
  
• 9Using white piping consistency royal icing, pipe dots on the top and bottom jaw to create dino teeth. To make them more pointy, gently drag the white icing with a toothpick or scribe tool.
  
• 10Once your flood base has dried and begun crusting over, use green piping consistency icing to pipe fine lines on the dino to create differentiation between the arms and the legs. If you don't wait until the icing has dried, the piping consistency icing will blend in with the flood consistency icing, resulting in lines that aren't clearly defined.

  Using white piping consistency icing, pipe claws on the feet and paws of the T-Rex.

  Gently drag a toothpick or scribe tool through the white dots to create sharper claws.

  Using black piping consistency royal icing, pipe a small dot to create an eye for your dino. If you want to skip mixing up a batch of black icing, you can also use a small candy or nonpareil to create the dinosaur eye.
