Matching PJs for Christmas: Star Pajama Tutorial
Matching PJs for Christmas: Star Pajama Tutorial
Make cookies to go with your matching Christmas PJs tradition! This wet-on-wet design is a fun way to create stars and diamonds, and it's fairly simple to do. By applying the star design while the red base icing is still wet, you can use a toothpick or scribe tool to create festive shapes. This is a fun technique to try when you're baking holiday cookies, and works on a number of shapes!

1
Bake and cool cookies before decorating. Try Ann Clark's no-fail sugar cookie recipe. Alternatively, you can create a decadent spread with our Chocolate Peppermint cookie recipe. Make sure cookies are fully cooled. If they are warm, the icing will run off of them. Make royal icing.

Prepare the following icing colors:
Detail Consistency:
Green
Red
Flood Consistency:
Green
Red
White -
3
Outline the entire cookie in red detail consistency icing. Be sure to leave some space at the cuffs of the sleeves and the collar of the pajamas, as we will be adding detail there later.
-
4
Fill the outlined space with red flood consistency icing. Use a toothpick or scribe tool to move the icing around, ensuring full coverage and popping any air bubbles.
The next steps must be done while the icing is still wet, so move quickly through Step 6.
-
5
Using white flood consistency icing, pipe dots throughout the pajama shape. Leave a bit of space between the dots, as you'll be using your scribe tool to drag them outwards to make stars.
-
6
While the dots are still wet, use your scribe tool to gently coax them outward. We did five-pointed stars, dragging each dot out to 5 points, but you can also create diamonds by dragging the white dots to make 4 separate points.
Using a sharp scribe tool, or even a food-safe needle, creates nice, sharp points for your stars.
Once you are done making all of your stars, let the icing crust over for about 10-15 minutes. -

Now time for the details! Use your red detail consistency icing to add cuffs to the sleeves, a collar, and a neat clasp at the top of the pajamas.
